[ and he is just so very proud of him! so easy a lost magical boy can do it!
he, of course, greets him with proud kisses, happy to see mat finding his own footing, finding some of himself while he's here with him. they have their own routine and domesticity that he can't imagine his life any other way now. it feels good. it doesn't take them long to walk hand in hand to the bougie grocery store he likes because he got a bunch of coupons on his phone and intends to use them all wisely.
as promised, they have the noodles, the veggies, the spices, as well as the ingredients for chocolate ice cream. but when they get to the ice cream aisle, milo grins and releases mat's hand, nudging him forward to choose their one (1) new pint for the day. ]
( there are times — moments, really, and fleeting ones at that — in which mathias feels completely out of his element in this new life of his, like someone's put cold hands on his shoulders, the weight of them almost too heavy to bear as they seem to whisper you do not belong here.
lately, though, mat has simply shrugged the feeling off. though he's certain that there are answers about himself out there, about where he came from, about his magical powers that seem to manifest when he least expects it ... why should he pursue them when he's so content with this life that he has found for himself with milo? he occasionally struggles with simple tasks that should apparently be obvious to most people his age, but over the past few months, mat has really tried his best to live as any normal person would, going to work for a few hours per week, catching up on television shows and movies he's certain he's never seen in his life, slipping beneath the covers at night and curling up beside his boyfriend who has made each dark, confusing moment vanish beneath the sunshine of his wide, bright smile.
said grin ushers mat forward as they approach the frozen section of the grocery store, and frankly, there's a giddy little burst of adrenaline that makes its way through his limbs, and before he knows it, he's very carefully stepping from door to door as he considers each brand of ice cream, hips shimmying a little as he drifts to the next — and mat maybe finally pauses in front of one, palms pressing against the window as he reads over the flavor names, the descriptions ...
and maybe there are frozen fractals spreading from his palms over the surface of the glass, and mat's oblivious, smiling so widely that his cheeks will probably hurt later. )
[ this might be his favorite part of his weekly grocery shopping trip. milo leans over the shopping cart, arms folded over the cart handle, unable to keep that ever so fond gummy smile off his face. there is a sparkle in his eyes as he watches mat peruse the familiar aisle, watching him make a very important decision.
quietly, he pulls his phone out, recording the little dance he has come to love, biting his lip to stop himself from giggling at the sight, not wanting mat to feel self-conscious. after maybe fifteen seconds of recording, he pockets his phone again and parks his cart to join him at the glass door, swiping his finger through the frost that has formed on the other side of the freezer. ]
What's caught your eye tonight?
[ without a second thought, he slings his arm around mat's waist, giving him an affectionate squeeze. ]
( there's a contented little hum as mat leans against milo, lips still pulled into a radiant smile as he tilts his head and regards the rows and rows of pints even further, as though he might gain a little clarity this way. )
It's hard to say — I thought I would have an easy time, but it appears we are Netflix and Chill-less. Chocolate Therapy is usually a good standby, very much full of mix-ins, but if I'm going to try making our own chocolate ice cream, I wouldn't want to overwhelm the freezer with a particular flavor profile ... ( and he opens the door, reaches out to pick a pint up to survey the description, reading aloud: ) Pucker Upper ... "raspberry sorbet with an extra tart lemonade sorbet swirl and sour sugar bits" ...
( there's a soft giggle as he turns his head to give milo a peck on the cheek. ) It's not exactly ice cream, but I do think puckering up sounds like a good idea!
